I say temporary because in my opinion unfortunately, it is not smart to replace the drive with another iomega zip as it's almost a given a similar or same problem will reoccur eventually. Whatever the reason for the read head solenoid not moving, it's reasonable to assume any repair or replacement of the defective parts would not be cost effective unless you can find a cheap temporary drive to move all your data somewhere else.
If the drive read operation does not happen for any reason, the read head does not move, the drive thinks there is no disk and the disk is ejected. The position of the media disk when inserted clearly shows that the head must be moved into the disk media window by a magnetic solenoid, whereafter the media inside the disk is read and displayed. Inside the drive the read head is clearly visible. My conclusions were that sensors, leaf switches, and/or solid state devices were not detecting/reading the disk media and therefore the drive was simply ejecting the media. Looking at my drive and reviewing iomega patents clearly show what should happen during normal drive operation, and what was not happening with mine. The iomega patent records for their drives show and define certain mechanism details and operations. My observations might be edifying for others here. I managed to find a local service shop that had a zip 250 IDE drive for little $ and jury rigged a temporary connection in order to transfer all my data from zip disks.Īlthough I would not recommend this to average users, I disassembled my SCSI drive for inspection and failure analysis. Replacement of the drive was, initially, my sense. All of your suggestions have been considered and/or tried. Posted this on the iomega user-user forum. Will appreciate any suggestions or solutions from forum members. So far no help or suggestion from anyone on the (official) iomega message board. I am a electronics technician and competent to inspect and/or repair the device (with appropriate parts if needed) but would rather ask advice first from anyone having experience with this problem.

I have not tried to reinstall the drive since it does involve steps which include the SCSI card as well as the hardware and software installation procedures.thought I'd ask help here first before digging into the computer (again). There have been no error popups anywhere with regard to this problem. I have gone into the device manager screen and there is no trouble indicated, advice is the device is working normally, and there is no malfunction indication next to that disk drive (which is external and SCSI connected). I have 5 250 MB disks which were always fine before, all of which are now ejected as described above. However now for the first time ever, no whirring sound when the disk is inserted and locked, silence from the drive, and the disk is ejected in 2-3 seconds. I always assumed the whirring sound is the disk motor turning. The usual sequence of operation(s) this zip drive are, is that a 250MB disk is inserted, a whirring sound is heard, and the data recorded is then displayed. I don't believe iomega even supports this hardware any more, but have had no problems with all my OS's including my present OS (XP) and Dell XPS 400 computer until today.

I have used my zip 250 drive with three versions of windows for at least 15 years. Looks like no one, even the (official) iomega forum moderator, wants to jump in on this one.
